Alison

Share a moment produced by Alison.
Share this moment with many others
who loll in a fountain on a late summer evening
as the dimming sun escapes the sky.
Smile.
Watch grins illuminate strange faces
as Alison trollops through shallow water
glad to be unleashed.
She wags her golden tail at tumbling foam
and sidles up to you
begging to be touched.
You pat her soggy fur as
others call out, “Hey cutie!”

Colors fade.
You fade.
Your own feature takes center stage.
You go back to staring in space.
As does the blonde skater boy,
the NYU student,
the dark brooding woman.

Alison drinks her reflection.

"Watch grins illuminate strange faces"

That is so rich. It resonates. Still.

Gee. This poem is so captivating.. yet so ellusive still.
Can you tell us a little about its inspiration, or compositional tones ?

Alison drinks her reflection. - Intense. Makes me wanna brood for a thousand days.

I love the final line of this - such a clever observation. The whole poem is really engaging, it demands to be read again in order to really absorb everything that is going on. There is so much colour and life in the scene. Lovely! Your style reminds me of a poet friend of mine. I'm not sure if links work in here but his website is http://frederickneeds.wordpress.com - it hasn't been updated in ages, but he's also on deviantart.com with the same username.

Thanks for sharing such a lovely poem. :)

Hey Sarah, I love the poetry of your comment, "Makes me wanna brood for a thousand days."

I was inspired to write this poem while sitting in the fountain in Washington Sqare Park in NYC. I noticed how everyone around me was in his or her own world. That was until Alison the dog was unleashed, and all of a sudden everyone was smiling and laughing, sharing a moment together. After a few minute though, eveyone went back into their own head and the division between strangers once again was felt.

I try to incorporate these feelings into the poem and try to get the reader to feel it too by inviting them into the moment.

Soph, I checked out your friends poetry. Yes the links worked! I think our topics are somewhat similar. The questioning yet confidence of chosing the right path.
Thank you for your compliment on my poem. Now that you've critiqued me in my previous one, your praise is all the greater.

Love the last line. Makes one ponder between the lines...

It's hard to watch two films together, let alone flip channels.

Are you still 'on'?

I guess we each must periodically turn ourselves off to have the energy for the next 'on'.

How are you?

reminds me of bygone days of running through dips and downs of long dry winter grass with mine of the same color...almost camouflaged against the backdrop except for the lab's bobbing black nose, bright mischievous eyes and a white toothy grin...

a pleasant one, thanks to the read

Mermaid: What do you mean by "on"?

I just started a new job, so caught up in that headspace for the present moment... but my creative muses should be bugging me pretty soon!
